Flashback to 4 BC (Before Catherine), or 1992 for those of you who like to be specific.
Yes, there was life before Catherine, although some days those memories are quite dim.
Here we are decked out for the wedding of one of Basil’s former co-workers. The white linen suit, a big favorite of his, is long gone now. Yellowing with age and protesting efforts to be buttoned, it was finally retired some years ago.
As I recall, the day was beastly hot and humid. The prevailing ridiculous fashion of the day called for seamed stockings and in the heat, it was a struggle to get into mine and get the blasted seams straight.
The dress? Basil treated me in a shop on Greenwich Avenue. We shopped all day long, up and down the street, in and out of the stores.
Shortly after buying the dress, as we continued our shopping odyssey, I shut my eyes briefly while Basil browsed the sale racks in Richards and awoke to hear some kid asking his mother, “Why is that lady sleeping?”
As you might guess, just like all the stories about Catherine, that memory is firmly etched in family lore.
