Flashback today to 1922 or 1923 — we’re not sure.
Basil’s cousin, Penny, dropped in while I was taking down the Christmas tree on New Year’s Day, laden with presents and good cheer. Among the treasurers she brought us was this photo, a copy of one she unearthed while digging through old memories.
I think you’ll agree it’s a keeper.
The fellow way at the right is my father-in-law, Nick, who looks to be about 4 or 5 here. The girl at left is Penny’s mother, Poppy. In between, from left, are Toni, Bessie (later Basil’s godmother) and Gus.
The twins, Helen and Marion, had not yet arrived on the scene.
Basil suspects they may have been celebrating Greek Independence Day, which falls in March.
Even though they all have such serious expressions, I find myself smiling every time I look at the photo. Their costumes, the headgear, the shoes!
There are so many things to love about this picture — even if it’s not my family. That Nick’s shirt is untucked, that Toni and Bessie are holding hands, that Gus and Poppy are in the same pose — this is an absolute treasure!
What a great picture! Looks like the girls wore longer skirts & the boys wore short skirts?
