They won’t be lazy, hazy days this year, but finally it’s summer. Why not flash back to simpler times, like this 2000 trip to the Bronx Zoo.
Still new homeowners, and having replaced the roof and windows and repaved the driveway, we opted then (as we seem to with increasing frequency now) for a Staycation.
Each day we had a new local adventure: the beach, Playland, Mystic Aquarium, and on this day, the Bronx Zoo.
These photos tell only half the story. Oh, it was a good time, but by the end of this hot August day, we’d had ENOUGH. Catherine slept the whole way home. Basil grumbled about needing a “real” vacation.
Exhausted from the heat and walking, we ordered in and tucked ourselves in bed early.
Standouts from the day included the children’s zoo pictured here as well as the Butterfly Zone, where Catherine and I enjoyed some flighty close encounters (Basil sat that one out); and the monkeys, naturally.
The polar bear stayed in hiding that day, but we did see a giraffe in all its odoriferous glory.
Then — as now — we avoided the snakes.
