Once upon a time I played the first clarinet part of this march — from memory.
Perfectly.
My fingers flew along the keys with ease and elan.
Alas, even without the pressure to memorize, the muscle memory is short-term. My age shows with every note (and depending on which part of the transitional lenses I look through, some notes more than others).
But I WILL master this before June 7.
…If it is the last thing I do.
(And if it requires every neighbor in a 5-mile radius to buy ear plugs.)

Posted by Terri S. Vanech | May 21, 2014, 7:10 amI wish I knew how to read music. I guess I’ve never learned.

Posted by Terri S. Vanech | May 20, 2014, 5:23 pmI played clarinet back in the day. I was never good at it, but I love the sounds it made.
Happy that you are playing again. You will do fine.
I need to start playing.

Posted by Terri S. Vanech | May 20, 2014, 10:45 amI’m still glad I never had to play the 1st clarinet part! I could never play so many notes within so few beats. I envied your skill back then, and I have every confidence that you can do it again next month! Have fun with it all!

Posted by Joelle | May 14, 2014, 11:08 amI’ve never been good at memorizing music to play. (Identification of pieces is another matter entirely.)
Violin works were hard enough. Now that I’m singing baritone in a choir, there are all of those words to add. Zulu as well as Renaissance Italian. Maybe somebody, somewhere, will let us in on the secret of doing it effortlessly?
