The main post office on Greenwich Avenue here in Greenwich — where Basil was Superintendent of Windows (no joke!) when we met 26 years ago — is now a Restoration Hardware. It opened to great fanfare in the local press this past week. The historic facade remains intact.
View from behind what was the counter in the main lobby, where the clerks waited on customers. The opposite wall is where the 1939 mural, “The Packet Sails from Greenwich,” resided.
Center of the former workroom floor. Corner of this couch is about where Basil’s desk was. If you squint, you can almost see the cigarette smoke rising in curls from his ashtray.
Postmaster’s office and private (marble) bathroom were here.
The former loading dock.
