Flashback to my nephew, Nicky, who turns 19 today.

This photo is of him and Catherine, probably about 10 years ago, following a Mother’s Day or birthday meal for my mother-in-law at a restaurant on Greenwich Avenue. As you can tell, Nicky has always been mad for Catherine, right from the day she was born.
As children, they were inseparable. Nicky would count the hours until he’d see her and they had great fun playing, watching movies, etc.
However, that’s not what makes this day so noteworthy.
I won’t embarrass Nicky by going into detail here, but suffice it to say he is a miracle, many times over. He has repeatedly beaten incredible odds, and somehow manages to keep that goofy smile on his face through it all.
Like Catherine, he is a senior this year, preparing college applications and looking toward a bright future.
Surely he was sent to us as a reminder to embrace each day, no matter what it brings.
