Some of you read my weekend post, which featured a very silly picture of Basil doing a handstand next to the Nantucket Light on our honeymoon. The photo tickled me no end; I’d forgotten about its existence until I stumbled on it during a trip through old albums.
But it didn’t make me laugh nearly as much as the present I found amid my email messages this morning.
My longtime friend, John Pontillo, created some amazing works of art with this crazy image of Basil and, well, I just had to share.
First a word about John. I’ve known him since first grade — we went to elementary and junior high school together, played in the Port Chester High School Band together, even shared a limo to the prom. He’s a very funny guy, with an offbeat sense of humor. He’s a terrific computer guy if you’re in need of tech support, too, btw.
This is how John and I looked 29 years ago. Like the hair? We were both rockin’ perms, which I guess seemed like a good idea at the time. He is still apologizing for his.

John and I are in the center. We went to prom with different dates, but managed to wear the same hairstyle. He still hasn’t lived that ’80s perm down.
Anyway, inspired by the photo of Basil, John created these, which had me laughing so hard in my pajamas that I nearly had coffee coming out of my nose. Of course I had to share them with you!
Here’s Basil at the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
And visiting the Sphynx.
Here he is at the Parthenon.
And at President Obama’s inauguration on Monday.
As always, Basil is a very good sport about all this. He had a good laugh as I loaded each of these into WordPress.
He mentioned, however, that he was glad no one can see his face.
What a great group of pictures! How dear to have a good friend to make you and your husband laugh. 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing. It was fun seeing where Basil would show up next. I loved your prom picture too. I also was a permer back in the day. So glad that is over. The smell was horrid!
Glad you stopped by!
oh gosh, I think I looked something like that too 29 years ago!
Yes, a lot of us did! 😉
Great Prom picture………made me think of a couple of PCHS proms I attended. So long ago!!!
Too long ago! We’re old!
We made by old…..but we’ve gotten better with age!!!
Absolutely!
I blame perms on “Annie.” I think she inspired all of us to be curly heads, me included.
I did it for years, which given my wavy hair was redundant. Wasn’t inspired by “Annie,” though; it’s the one show I cannot stomach.
I should have gone with Daddy Warbucks do! Anyway.. I think my prom date must of had a “thing” for Michael Jackson.. thats the only reason why I would think she would even want to go with me..whatever her name was….
And why is this post 75% about the prom and our hair! What happened to “Where in the world is Basil!?” Darn you Terri!
You are too funny. It’s very strange that we still wear the same hairstyle, John — now both short and spiky. What’s that about?!
TERRI!!!!!!! You just LOVE to pull that prom photo out EVERY chance that you get!!! Did Basil put you up to that for revenge?
I showed it to my son and he actually got scared!!! And why did you crop Basil out of our prom photo? Wasn’t he doing his handstand in front of the Limo? ; )
I almost used a King Street class photo on which you were the only one wearing a tie. But the perm is so much better! Thanks for the fun!
What fun! Basil certainly hit the high spots and your friend is very talented! Reia
Thank goodness for good friends who can help us find the laughter no matter what!
